The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) is responsible for managing the Australian Government’s official overseas aid program. AusAID is an autonomous body within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The objective of the Australian aid program is to advance Australia’s national interest by assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development.  The main geographic focus of the bilateral aid program is in Papua New Guinea, Asia and the Pacific. Selected assistance is also given to South Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The five priority sectors for Australia’s aid are Education, Health, Infrastructure, Rural Development and Governance. Gender and environment are the two key cross-cutting issues in the Australian aid program. AusAID is seeking to establish an Economics Advisory Panel. It is expected that the Panel will comprise approximately 40 experts across the four Technical Expertise Categories either from individual entities or organisations. The purpose of the Economics Advisory Panel is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of Australia’s aid program by providing high quality advice and analysis on economics-related issues to AusAID. AusAID sections and overseas posts will be able to contract members of the Panel for short-term assignments of varying duration. Australian Government Organisations (AGOs) may also avail themselves of the services of the Economics Advisory Panel in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines. The establishment of the Economics Advisory Panel will contribute to program quality, policy development and development effectiveness by:

(a) Ensuring that economics-related issues within AusAID’s initiatives are based on international good practice, Australian and regional lessons learned, and insights from other regions and donors;

(b) Assisting AusAID to keep up to date with trends and developments by building its knowledge base through participating in peer reviews, evaluations, research, sharing experience and knowledge in formal and informal ways, and assisting the agency to apply its knowledge practically in its programs; and

(c) Providing AusAID with timely access to world-class development economists.

It is anticipated that the Economics Advisory Panel will be operational by the beginning of financial year 2010-11, and will stand for a three (3) year period, with an option to extend for a further two (2) years.
