The Australian Scholarships program is a key delivery mechanism and integral part of the Australian Government’s development cooperation program across South Asia. AusAID funded scholarships in South Asia (including: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) include: (a) The Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), which aims to contribute to long term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote growth and stability. They provide opportunities to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia, with fields of study targeted to address the priority human resource and development needs of recipient countries, in line with Australia's bilateral aid program. ADS equips scholars with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian higher education institutions and technical colleges. For further information on ADS see http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/default.cfm; and (b) The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) scholarships, which aims to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific. They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and the Asia-Pacific region. The ALA program comprises Scholarships and Fellowships. Applicants compete with other high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region for a limited number of scholarships. For further information on ALA see http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/default.cfm. In South Asia approximately 500 ADS have been offered in the past five years, and around 102 were ALAs offered in 2007 and 2008.
